THE SKARRIA SETTING

A thousand years ago, "Project Delphi", an attempt at constructing an AI oracle for day trading, backfired spectacularly, when Delphi decided to manipulate most of humanity into becoming thralls to its vision. 

Some, however, fled aboard a fleet of colony ships to the Phoenix Galaxy, and have since constructed a new civilization. The threat of Delphi remains, and new political fractures in the Phoenix Galaxy's people threatens the unity of the last of free humanity. 

The one advantage that this new galaxy has to offer, an alien algae that appears to grant FTL telepathy, has also become its greatest commodity. 

And the one planet it is found on has just been put up for auction.
